We remind you before the expiry date. After expiry you get a 15-day grace period; after that the website shows a "temporarily unavailable" page. Your details are kept, and the website comes back instantly when you renew.
No. A downloaded copy is a snapshot. After editing, download again (free for the same website) and upload the new files to your server.
